Trick or Retreat?

Last night our house was inundated with witches, princesses, and superheroes. I’m not sure if our trick or treaters loved the selection of candy, or maybe it was the fact that our house is in the center of the neighborhood, but our doorbell rang again and again. We asked all the kids to say “trick or treat” if they didn’t offer it up themselves. So far, fingers crossed, no tricks have been played on us or our home. I think we are all more interested in the treats.

Humans Are Tricky

I recently had the chance to participate in a weeklong nonprofit leadership course at Duke University. The Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership offers experienced nonprofit professionals the opportunity to increase their capacity for effective entrepreneurial leadership through theoretical studies and executive skills training.

Can You Say No?

On Monday night I had requests to be three places, all at once. It’s happened to us all, especially in this Fall season when we are gearing up for many great things. I agonized over one of the requests. It was to fill in for another leader who was out to town and help kick off the giving campaign. And It was for a group I am passionate about, and I love to help. But in the end, I said “no, I am so sorry I can’t be there.”

The Day After

As we say in the South, it’s fall, y’all. Time for tailgates, pumpkin patches, and hay rides. And in the non-profit sector, it’s time for giving days. Giving Tuesday is the most well know of course, but higher education and independent schools also have alumni giving days tied to big rivalry games or anniversaries. Whatever your big giving day is, are you ready for what comes after?
