Every year on November 13 the world comes together to celebrate World Kindness Day, first introduced by a coalition of NGOs in 1998. The day serves as an annual international reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can create ripples of positivity to others, your community, and yourself. In our fast-paced world where our task list often takes center stage and civil debate is lacking, this day encourages us to pause and reflect on the power of compassion.

I have come to learn that kindness is part of a leadership mindset that transforms workplaces, communities, and relationships. When we choose kindness, we foster trust, collaboration, and a sense of belonging. It’s not just about grand or public gestures, but sometimes it is the simplest and consistent acts like a smile, a thank you, taking time off to care for yourself, or lending a listening ear that make the biggest impact.

While a lot of nonprofit professionals are experts in practicing kindness to others (Interpersonal Kindness), I would also like to remind you to include yourself (Personal Kindness). This means practicing self-care, setting healthy boundaries, and giving yourself grace and space when things don’t go as planned. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and our sector needs the best version of you.

My favorite lyrist/poet, Robert Hunter, and guitarist/singer, Jerry Garcia beautifully pose a reflective question at the end of the Verse 1 in Uncle John’s Band, “Is are you kind?” I hope you will join me in making kindness a daily habit, not just an occasional act. We all know that kindness is contagious and let’s not just celebrate Kindness Day, let’s live it every day.
