Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe

Katie Weeks
Senior Advisor and Interim Management Coordinator

Have you ever heard the saying “Your vibe attracts your tribe?”

Have you ever noticed how people who typically see their glass half-empty seem to consistently have bad stuff happen to them? They are the ones who get a flat tire, are constantly sick and, once again, are ticketed by the parking attendant. You catch my drift?

Can you think of someone who sees the world full of possibilities? Whose positive energy is contagious? This person seems to get great tickets to the hot concert, they get career advancements, and they seem to have people cheering them on in all aspects of their life.

This is called the Law of Attraction.

Like attracts like.

If this is true for an individual, then I would like to suggest that it is also true for organizations.

Organizations with a sense of being overworked, without enough money in the budget, who get turned down again for yet another grant…there is an energy the organization is putting out and, therefore, negative responses are what the organization attracts.

Conversely, when an organization is constantly demonstrating an attitude of gratitude, a feeling that they are making a difference, they exude positive energy. People want to be part of that winning team.

My challenge for you is to think about how you can put out a more positive vibe as an individual. Some items might include:

  • Intentionally smiling at people at the store.
  • Giving someone an unexpected compliment.
  • Bringing in a special treat to the office just because you wanted to show how much you appreciate the team.
  • Challenging the negative talk in your head. Try to stop it from coming out of your mouth and instead find a way to reframe it into a positive. (This is a BIG task that can take years to master. Start small by simply being aware of these negative thoughts.)

My second challenge for you is to think about what you can do for your organization to put a positive vibe out. Some ideas may include:

  • Calling a donor unexpectedly to tell them about how much you appreciate them.
  • Sharing a story on social media about a small act that had a big impact.
  • Asking your team to identify limiting beliefs. Describe what isn’t working with that approach and find a way to reframe it into a positive. For instance, instead of saying “There isn’t enough time to do xyz” say “We have to focus our time to accomplish xyz.” While it may be true that time is limited and the workload is great, maybe (just maybe) a change in your language will make a difference.

Move from negative to positive one small step at a time. Test the theory of “your vibe attracts your tribe” and let me know what happens!
