I Want to Be an Oak Tree

Mickey Holt
Senior Advisor

During a recent visit to Savannah, I had the chance to take a guided tour of the city, which left me mesmerized by its breathtaking live oak trees. The tour guide shared fascinating details, pointing out several oaks in the park that were over 250 years old. As I gazed at their majestic branches, I couldn’t help but ponder the stories these ancient trees must hold—the changes they’ve witnessed, the challenges they’ve endured, and the remarkable resilience that has allowed them to thrive through the centuries.

Imagine yourself as an oak tree, firmly rooted yet endlessly evolving. Your roots extend deep into the soil, providing stability and nourishment. These roots represent your core values, experiences, and identity—your unwavering foundation amidst the shifting winds of life. They ground you, ensuring that no matter how turbulent the storm, you remain anchored.

As the seasons change, so does the oak tree. Spring brings a burst of energy, with fresh green leaves symbolizing new opportunities and growth. Summer represents a period of flourishing, a time to bask in the fruits of your efforts. Then comes autumn, a season of transition and letting go. The oak releases its leaves, shedding what it no longer needs to prepare for the stillness of winter. In these moments of shedding, the oak teaches us that letting go is not a loss but a necessary step toward renewal.

Winter arrives, and though the oak stands bare, it is not lifeless. Beneath the surface, its roots continue to grow, strengthening and preparing for the promise of spring. This quiet period is a reminder that even in times of apparent stillness or challenge, there is unseen growth and resilience building within us.

The oak’s branches stretch high into the sky, open to sunlight and rain alike. They adapt and bend with the wind, illustrating the importance of flexibility. Life’s changes may push and pull at us, but like the oak’s branches, we can remain strong while being flexible enough to weather the shifts.

And let’s not forget the acorns—a testament to the oak tree’s enduring legacy. Each acorn holds the potential for a new oak tree, representing the power of transformation and the impact of embracing change. When we face change with courage and an open heart, we not only grow ourselves but also inspire and influence those around us, much like the oak spreading its seeds.

The oak tree also reminds us to remain patient. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does adaptation to change. The oak takes decades to reach its full grandeur, teaching us that embracing change is a journey, not a race.

Finally, picture the oak standing tall in the heart of a forest. It does not exist in isolation but thrives as part of a larger ecosystem. This reflects the importance of seeking support during times of change. Just as the oak shares its shade with the creatures around it, we can lean on our loved ones, friends, and mentors for encouragement and guidance.

By seeing yourself as an oak tree—steadfast yet adaptable, grounded yet open to growth—you can navigate the ebbs and flows of life’s changes with grace and strength. The oak doesn’t resist the seasons; it embraces each one, knowing that every moment, every change, contributes to its magnificent journey. I am thrilled that my professional journey has brought me to the Armstrong McGuire team—a true group of strong, evolving, growing leaders that is much like the oak tree in the nonprofit ecosystem.
