The Power of Scenario Thinking

The Armstrong McGuire team has been honored to journey with several organizations in scenario thinking workshops and sessions in 2025. Below please find highlights aggregated from those sessions. Special thanks to the NC Center for Nonprofits, the Virginia Center for Nonprofit Excellence, Bloomerang, Communities In Schools of NC, VA Funders Network, and AFP Charlotte for welcoming us into these conversations.

What It Is and Why It Matters

Scenario thinking is a powerful tool that helps organizations anticipate multiple possible futures and prepare strategies that are flexible, resilient, and mission-driven. Rather than relying on a single forecast, scenario thinking invites leaders to explore “what if” situations and stress-test plans against a range of outcomes, ideally outside the emotion of a critical moment.

Scenario thinking isn’t about predicting the future. It is about being ready for it. By considering diverse possibilities, nonprofits can uncover risks, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions that safeguard their impact.

5 Practical Tips to Apply Scenario Thinking
  1. Identify Key Drivers of Change: These include external forces such as economic trends, policy shifts, and demographic changes that could influence your work and internal triggers such as turnover, space constrictions, or system changes.
  2. Create Multiple Plausible Futures: Move beyond worst-case planning. Develop scenarios that include good, better, and best-case scenarios as well as challenging possibilities.
  3. Engage Leadership and Board: Use scenarios to spark strategic conversations, align priorities, and embed adaptability into governance. Make scenario thinking part of your committee meeting agendas.
  4. Translate Scenarios into Action: Build a portfolio of opportunistic or no-regrets moves, contingency plans, and bold bets that can be activated as conditions evolve.
  5. Monitor and Pivot: Establish clear indicators and simple dashboards to know when it’s time to adjust course.

Scenario thinking empowers nonprofits to lead with confidence in uncertain times. By embracing this approach, you position your organization not just to survive change, but to thrive in the best or most challenging of times.
