Hats Off to Those Behind the Nonprofit Sector

On November 15th, the country celebrates National Philanthropy Day in recognition of the power and potential of philanthropy as “the love of humanity”.  At events across the country outstanding volunteers, philanthropist, corporate givers, and professional fundraisers are honored with awards and recognition.

Thanksgiving, the following week, is the traditional day to commemorate gratitude and express appreciation for our blessings, abundance, families, friends, food and the joy of gathering together.

During this month of heightened philanthropic gratitude it is an ideal time to express appreciation for the more than 400,000 people in North Carolina who work in the nonprofit sector, about 10% of the private sector workforce. Employees of the sector dedicate their lives to ensure food, care, employment, education, shelter, physical and mental health, justice and so much more is delivered to improve the quality of life of residents in their communities.

Let’s celebrate the skill and wisdom of the individuals who work behind the scenes in the nonprofit field, not for the money, or the glory but because they are drawn toward a purposeful life, to give and to express their love for humanity through their daily service.  The days are long, the wages are low, and the work is hard but they know they are making a difference in someone’s life.

Thank you to the administrative staffs, the receptionist, the program officers, the caregivers, the counselors, the bookkeepers, the marketing staff, development directors,  the office managers and the staff members who don’t get a lot of credit.

To those who work in the sector, take some time this month to nurture and strengthen yourself, in order to replenish the energy you need to take care of others.  Here are a few tips:

1)     Look in the mirror first thing in the morning and know you are appreciated for who you are and what you do.

2)     When the pressure starts to build, breathe deeply and center yourself.  Don’t get lost in the chaos.

3)     Nurture yourself, relax, get a good night’s sleep and eat healthy food.

4)     Replenish your spirit, take a walk in the woods, stretch, smile, read a good book.

5)     Carve out quality time to be with those you love, seek out happiness, laugh and love yourself.

Happy Philanthropy Day! Thank you for the work you do.  Know you are appreciated.  You are the silent majority that keeps the philanthropic world moving along smoothly.
