Not long ago all of us were being asked to do our civic duty and help each other by staying home and keeping our distance from one another. While emotionally and financially difficult, it is believed to be the most effective means of confronting this terrible COVID-19 pandemic until a vaccine is discovered that allows us to come together again.
Fred Rogers often told this story about when he was a boy and would see scary things on the news: “My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.”
Without question it is a crazy week in the world. And while we do not yet know the full human or financial impact of this health pandemic, our gratitude goes out to all those who will step into the uncertainty of the weeks and months ahead to continue providing medical care, mental health services, spiritual comfort, child and senior care, public safety, food and shelter, and other necessities of life.
Happy New Year! Happy leap year! Happy new decade! I hope you found just the right balance of celebration and reflection on the year that has passed, mixed with a strong dose of readiness and anticipation for what lies ahead in 2020.
