This summer, Colisha Stanford, CEO of StepUp Ministry, joined a cohort of nonprofit leaders from across the country as Armstrong McGuire’s Fellow in the PMA Mastermind Program, a virtual leadership development program for nonprofit leaders who are serious about advancing their skills in the nonprofit sector and propelling their leadership to the next level. Colisha came into the program with deep roots in community leadership and a clear goal: to keep learning.
“As a lifelong learner, I believe that growing alongside other seasoned professionals is essential to my development,” Colisha shared before beginning the program. “I was especially looking forward to learning how other leaders navigate challenges in today’s ever-changing nonprofit landscape.”
And the experience didn’t disappoint. In her reflections, Colisha noted how the SCOT Analysis helped her lean into her leadership strengths; particularly her gift for cultivating people and ideas.
“The program reminded me to lead from my strengths and not lose sight of the value I bring,” she shared. “The conversations around self-care and decluttering were also powerful. As leaders, we can get caught in the daily grind—but self-care is critical if we want to lead well and lead by example.”
Colisha also appreciated the candid space to hear from other nonprofit executives; insights she’s already using to strengthen her leadership at StepUp.
"It helped me better understand how my direct reports might be feeling, especially in this current climate. I realized I need to be even more intentional in our check-ins—asking deeper questions, creating space, and making sure we’re aligned.”
For those considering applying, Colisha recommends the program for anyone exploring their path to higher-level leadership.
“I would recommend this program to someone who is truly in the process of pondering what it takes to step into a high-level leadership position. It helps you process what it takes to get ready for a role and helps you identify the tools you need to be ready for the role."
Armstrong McGuire is once again partnering with PMA Nonprofit Leadership to sponsor one Armstrong McGuire Fellow for the upcoming Fall 2025 Mastermind Program.
The selected Armstrong McGuire Fellow will receive a full scholarship ($1,850 value) to participate in the program. Apply by August 29.
